APRN Consensus Model

APRN FAQs

ANCC supports the transformative changes to the future of advanced practice nursing as a result of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification, and Education. We will provide up-to-date certification information throughout the implementation of this modernized process.

As an active participant in the development and launch of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation, ANCC is leading the way to ensure that certification bodies are involved in shaping this transformative model and guiding the implementation process. ANCC looks forward to the progress and opportunities the consensus model will provide for the profession, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and patients.

The consensus model supports the goals of the ANCC APRN certification process and will align the inter-relationships among licensure, accreditation, certification, and education to create a more uniform practice across the country. The expectation is that the consistency – and clarity – that results from the new consensus model will take advanced practice nursing to the next level, benefiting individual APRNs and enhancing patient care.

Implementation Complete by 2015
The necessary coordination among licensure, accreditation, certification, and education bodies required by this consensus model has led to an incremental implementation process . Although the model was completed in 2008, its effects on certification are just beginning to take shape. The target date for full implementation of the APRN regulatory model across the four essential elements is 2015.

ANCC will continue to offer its current APRN certification programs while we explore what is needed for a successful transition. As implementation of the new consensus model progresses, ANCC certification programs may change to more closely reflect the roles and populations required in the model.
