Why do I need to renew my certification?
The purpose of ANCC's certification renewal program is to provide evidence that individuals continue to expand and maintain knowledge in their certification specialty. ANCC conducts role delineation studies (RDS) every five years to determine changes in practice. The results of the RDS may demonstrate sufficient changes in practice that may require the development of a new test content outline and a new examination. Based on the anticipated results from these studies, the Commission on Certification established the five-year period for renewing certification.
How will I know when I need to renew my certification?
In 2006, ANCC developed an extensive process to notify nurses of their certification expiration date. This process begins 6 months before the certification expiration date and includes traditional letter and postcard reminders, as well as electronic mailings. ANCC no longer mails out certification catalogues – the most current renewal catalog and the renewal requirements are posted on our web site (see link below).
ANCC is happy to assist you with your renewal process; however, it is the responsibility of all nurses to keep track of their certification expiration date and submit their renewal documents in a timely manner. Please inform ANCC of any address or name changes so you will receive the proper certification renewal reminders.
If you are an advanced practice nurse, be aware that you may become ineligible to practice in your state beyond your certification expiration date.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept applications or other forms and supporting documents submitted via fax.
Note: Each candidate should maintain evidence of completed continuing education and retain a copy of the completed certification renewal application in case his or her file is selected for audit.

What Happens After I Mail My Application?
After mailing your application you will receive a communication by mail, phone and/or email if there are any questions about your application or supporting documents. The time frame required in completing the individual evaluation of your application and supporting documents varies with the complexity of the content, and the specific certification being reviewed.
