Nevada Student Wins Award Sponsored by ANCC

2008 GED Awards Recipient - Reynolds

$2,500 Award to Support Student Nurse

Silver Spring, MD (August 5, 2008)—Georganna Reynolds of Reno, Nevada has been awarded the American Nurses Credentialing Center-sponsored GED® Testing Service Tuition Scholarship, presented at the GED Graduates’ Awards Dinner on July 16, 2008 in Sparks, NV. Each recipient of a GED Testing Service Scholarship receives $2,500 toward college tuition in the field of their choosing.
Reynolds will be using her award to pursue her baccalaureate degree in nursing from Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno. The award was presented by Dr. David Paulson, ANCC Director of Measurement Services.

"We feel very pleased that Reynolds has chosen to pursue a career in nursing. This profession is made up of dedicated people like her, who overcome challenging obstacles every day in the pursuit of a very rewarding career," said Dr. Jeanne Floyd, Executive Director of ANCC. "Reynolds' commitment to pursuing her GED credential shows she is precisely the kind of person we need in this field - and we are delighted to support her in this goal."

After moving to a new school in her junior year of high school, Georganna struggled to adjust to life in a small rural town. She received positive support regarding her decision to leave high school from her mother and instructors with the stipulation that she earn her GED. In June of 1996, she realized that she was approaching what would have been her graduation date had she stayed in school, yet she had still had not pursued her GED. This realization sent her to the Adult Learning Center at Boise State where she began to review materials on each subject and take practice tests, ultimately earning her GED credential.

Earning her GED gave Georganna drive and direction that she did not previously have. She began to save money for an advanced degree and, after two years, enrolled in a community college. Just as she began to pursue her academic dreams, her mother died. She considered putting her goals on hold so that she could attend to her father. However, with much support from him, she continued focusing on her studies and, in 2006, she earned an Associate Degree and transferred to the University of Nevada, Reno where she began to pursue a career in nursing.

"As I know from my mother and grandmother, it is a field where no matter where you are or what you do, you can always make a difference in someone's life," said Reynolds.
