Policy for Retesting of Certification Candidates
If a candidate fails an examination, whether it is paper and pencil or computer based, ANCC staff will send a retest application. Candidates who retest within two years of their original test administration will pay a special reduced fee and will not be required to meet any additional eligibility criteria, which have been imposed since the date of the last failed exam. The reduced rate is for one retest only. In the event that the candidate fails the retest examination and does not meet new eligibility criteria imposed since the original test date, one additional retest will be permitted based on the original eligibility criteria provided that:
- No more than two years have passed since the original test date;
- The current fees for application and testing are paid in full at the time of application; and
- The candidate continues to meet, at least, the original requirements (e.g., current licensure as an RN, current practice, etc.)
If the candidate fails the examination, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) will send a retest application. The candidate will not be required to meet any additional eligibility requirements that have been imposed since the original application date. The following conditions apply or must be met before the candidate is permitted to retest:
- At least 90 days have passed since the previous administration.
- No more than two years have passed since the original administration.
- The current retest fees are paid in full and a completed retest application has been received.
- The reduced fee is for one retest only.
The candidate is permitted to take the examination only three times within a 12-month period. If the candidate fails the retest, he or she must:
- submit a new application,
- wait at least 90 days after the retest,
- meet current eligibility requirements, and
- pay the full fee
